A 2year old child Taniya died when she fell in uncovered high drain in Ramnagar lane of Garden Reach area. The local people tried to rescue her but they failed to do so. At last Garden Reach Police was informed and the River Traffic police came and rescue at 10pm last night. The child fell in the high drain at 5pm in the evening on Wednesday.
Tabera Bibi, Taniya’s Grandmother, “For long we are trying to rescue our child but till now our councilor (Sunlan Singh) didn’t even came to help us. I would ask for punishment of those responsible for this kind of negligence”.
Kolkata Municipal Corporation was about to look after and maintain the city drainage system. Farzana Chowdhury, KMC MMiC (drainage) said, “We will investigate the incident. After that we will decide whether the high drain should be covered or not. I can’t tell you anything before I get the report regarding the incedent.”
Subhrata Mukherjee, ex-Major said, “It’s a normal incident in Kolkata and the way KMC working we can’t ask for more. We can see that this corporation’s function. Still the major is not resigning. Major should apologize to the people of Kolkata.”
“There are 35,000 people in vigilance department, but where are they? Are they working?” asked the TMC leader Sovan Chatterjee. Chatterjee also said, “Mayor is a high court lawyer of Agartala. He didn’t know Kolkata at all. It’s natural it will rain in rainy season but we can’t afford to take common people’s life. Incident repeats still the KMC not aware regarding this kind of incidents.”
When the children taken to the SSKM hospital after rescue Taniya was declared dead. Meanwhile Taniya’s parents asked the Garden Reach Police station not to do the postmortem of the child.
